Riverside, California - June 2, 2014 - Scott Bailey stole a line from The Terminator Sunday and said "we'll be back." There wasn't much else that needed to be said after a weekend the Stronghold Motorsports team owner called the worst in team history.
The Reno Off Road Nationals started out nicely enough, with Pro 4 driver Brandon Bailey as a featured guest of Denver motor sports reporter Kurt Hansen on his ESPN radio show Friday evening. But after that rounds 5 and 6 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series had more ups and downs than the hillside track at Wild West Motorsports Park in Sparks, Nevada, May 30-31.
Brandon was having one of his best races in round 5, moving from seventh at the start to fifth just before the halfway point in the 16-lap race. Then, with everyone fighting for position on a restart after a caution flag, Bailey got pushed to the right and into the concrete K-rail on the inside of the hairpin Turn 3. That incident left the front end of the MAVTV/Toyo Tires/SolarWorld Ford truck too damaged for him to be able to continue.
Bailey got off to a great start again in round 6, after Nick Griner and his crew had rebuilt the front end of the truck, by passing two competitors early in the first lap. Then the red light on the instrument panel came on, indicating a loss of oil pressure, and rather than continue and perhaps destroy the motor, Bailey pulled off at the end of the opening lap and called it a weekend.
"It was feeling good," he said. "We had a good truck. We got into turn one and got a couple of guys right there and the motor just went. It's a bummer, but you can't do anything about it. It doesn't give you any warning."
It was even worse for Pro Buggy driver Larry Job. He was sidelined by transmission failure three laps into the round 5 main event and was forced to sit out round 6 as well.
"It was the conclusion of a tough month," Scott Bailey said. "That's why they call it racing. Sometimes you have a good weekend. Unfortunately, in the history of our team this is the worst that we've ever had.
"What you do is go back to the drawing board. We'll relook at things and get our arms around it. We'll be ready to the next race. We'll be in Utah ready to go."
The next event on the schedule, the Utah Off Road Nationals, are June 21-22 at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.
